Chinese Zodiac Elements Explained: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal & Water
A Chinese zodiac year is described by both an animal and one of five elements. The animal repeats every 12 years; the complete animal-element pairing repeats every 60 years.

Your element is determined by the zodiac year that contains your birth date. For birthdays in January or early February, check the Chinese New Year boundary first—your zodiac year may be the previous Gregorian year.

The five elements used with Chinese zodiac years are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. They are part of the traditional heavenly-stem system. The ten stems advance in order, with each element appearing twice before the sequence moves to the next element.

Why the animal and element form a 60-year cycle
The twelve zodiac animals correspond to the twelve earthly branches. Separately, ten heavenly stems repeat in their own sequence. A stem and a branch are paired for each traditional year; because 10 and 12 meet again after 60 steps, the complete pairing repeats every 60 years.
This is why an animal alone does not identify the full traditional year. A Dragon returns every 12 years, for example, but a Wood Dragon and a Fire Dragon belong to different points in the longer cycle.
Four calendar examples
2024: Wood Dragon
2024 began the Wood Dragon year at Chinese New Year. The animal is Dragon; the paired element is Wood.
2025: Wood Snake
The next year advances the animal from Dragon to Snake, while Wood remains for the second consecutive stem in the pair.
2026: Fire Horse
2026 begins the Fire Horse year on February 17. Fire starts the next two-year element pair after Wood.
2020: Metal Rat
2020 was a Metal Rat year. The same full pairing returns every 60 years, not every 12 years.
