Find Your Chinese Zodiac Sign by Birth Date

Use your complete Gregorian birth date—not only your birth year—to identify the zodiac year, animal, and five-element pairing that apply to your date.

Check your exact birth date

The calculator compares your date with Chinese New Year for that year. In 2026, the boundary is 2026-02-17; dates before it remain in the previous zodiac year.

The three-step method

  1. Start with your complete Gregorian birth date.
  2. Find the Chinese New Year boundary for that Gregorian year.
  3. If your birthday is before the boundary, use the previous zodiac year; otherwise use that year’s animal and element.

This is why a generic “birth year = zodiac animal” list can be wrong for dates in January or early February. Read the detailed Chinese New Year boundary guide for the calendar context.

These paired examples show why the date—not just the year—changes the result.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find my Chinese zodiac sign from my birth year alone?

Usually, but not reliably for January and early-February birthdays. The Chinese zodiac year starts on Chinese New Year, not on January 1, so use your full birth date near that boundary.

What date does Zodiac Compass use as the boundary?

It compares the entered Gregorian birth date with that Gregorian year’s Chinese New Year date. A birthday before the boundary belongs to the previous zodiac year.

What range of birth dates can I check?

The calculator currently supports Gregorian birth dates from 1900 through 2100.

Method and sources

Zodiac Compass uses Chinese New Year dates for the supported 1900–2100 range, then maps the resulting zodiac year to the traditional twelve-animal and five-element cycles.
